Charming Country Blues with Bowling Green John & Harmonica Phil Wiggins What is so remarkable about this duo is their intense dedication to the black blues and gospel tradition - but without diminishing the quality or spontaneity of their performance

Listening to John Cerphas on guitar, one is quickly struck by the power of his playing. Deeply rooted in the so-called, "Piedmont" blues tradition of the East Coast, the ragtime influence, as well as the complex rhythms, create a strong emphasis on melody - in stark contrast to the hard Mississippi blues with its hard beat and drive

When Phil Wiggins recorded the album, he was 26 years old. But despite his young age he was already counted among the best blues harp players. His influences include Hammie Nixon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Shakey Hotton. To perfect his playing technique, whether for country blues or the electrically amplified variety in the best Chicago tradition, he played alongside Flora Molton, Archie Edwards, Big Chief Ellis, the late Esther Mae "Mother" Scott and John Jackson, and jammed with well-known blues veterans like Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red.
